I would purchase a metrocard good for the 3 days you will be in town, this will permit unlimited ridership on all buses and subways.
Also you could visit Edgar Allan Poe’s house on Grand Concourse in the Bronx. It’s where his wife, I think, died. Afterward he went back to Baltimore.
