THIS IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE INCIDENT AT MASSENA ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY — QUITE SOMETHING! JOHN Massena is a quiet city in upstate New York. It sits beside the St. Lawrence River across the water from Canada. The Jewish population of Massena is small and supports one synagogue. Massena seems an unlikely location for a major event in American Jewish history, but it was. In 1928, a blood libel accusation against the 100 or so Jewish residents then living in Massena tore the city apart. Blood libels have been a part of Jewish history at least since 1144, when the Jews of England were accused of having purchased a Christian boy –the child martyr, William of Norwich—to torture and crucify him. At the heart of the blood libel is the charge that Jews murder Christian children to procure their blood, or more rarely their internal organs, to make matzoh at Passover. Geoffrey Chaucer, author of the Canterbury Tales, accused the “cursed Jewes” of infanticide in “The Prioress’s Tale.” The myth of Jewish ritual sacrifice persisted through the centuries and occasionally resonated on the fringes of American society, no place more openly and angrily than in Massena, New York. On erev Yom Kippur, 1928, the New York State police brought in Rabbi Berel Brennglass of Massena’s Orthodox congregation Adath Israel for questioning. Each year, more than 30000 Minnesota youth find themselves unable to live at home. Since 1919, almost 3000 of them have lived at a particular North Minneapolis building. When they leave, some return to their own families, some begin new chapters with foster families, colleges, or their own apartments. Some return to the streets. From a Minnesota History Center exhibit titled “We couldn’t live at home”, co-sponsored by the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest. The project, seeks to stimulate discussion about children and youth who live in foster care, in incarceration, in homeless shelters, couch-hopping and on the streets; the young people who “couldn’t live at home”. If Not Now, When? If Not Me, Then Who? In the early 1980’s, Mary Fellman had an idea, and from that idea, Mary Fellman, Oliver Pollack and the Omaha Jewish Community started and over 25 years have grown The Nebraska Jewish Historical Society. This video is an edited version (to meet You Tube standards) of the video that was produced by the NJHS for its 25th Anniversary. Approximately 4 minutes of pictures have been deleted, and I hope to provide a full version in the future.

Unpacking on the Prairie was an exhibit in partnership with the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest and the Minnesota Historical Society focusing on Jewish women in the Upper Midwest. A traveling version of the main exhibit toured for seven years and the award-winning Web exhibit — www.jhsum.org remains an important resource today.

They were hated and persecuted in Europe – but I don’t think it started because the Eurpoeans rejected them
I think it was because they rejected the Europeans refusing to associated with the nation or the King etc they were in
So my question is
Does a Jew have a nationality beyond being Jewish ?
It seems to me they do not
They are a Jew – that happens to be somewhere – The US Canada Russia etc But they are never Russian’s or Canadian’s they are Jews
They recognose only themselves keeping seperate now and in the past from the society they find themselves in
Is this in part or in whole —–true ? Am I way off base ?
Is this in part or in whole the reason they have been so universally hated for so many thousands of years ?
To me it seems quite impressive that they have remained this seperate for this long – but I do believe it was thier choice first
